The playground at Delungra Public School came alive in the holidays, getting a facelift in the form of a koala mural courtesy of Brisbane artist, James Ellis.

It took one day to craft the koala mural, and the following day, with the assistance of fellow artist Jarad Danby, they covered the side wall of the main school building with local birds.

This wall measures approx 10m by one storey high, and features a larger than life Kingfisher and King Parrot, who will cheer the kids on in their cricket matches for years to come.

Delungra School principal, Toni Withers, was delighted with this outcome.

"We love our koalas, they are so significant at our school. This is a symbol of our relationship with the koalas, as Delungra has one of the truly healthy koala populations."

School staff had been planning and exploring artistic ideas for a long time, and also admired James's fantastic art in Moree.

"We contacted him in December and the work was completed by February," Ms Withers said. "It's good for our wellbeing. They make us feel good - the colours are bright and beautiful."

James, at only 24 years of age, has been travelling around country areas, practising and perfecting his mural art since 2015.

Not one to blow his own trumpet, James attributes his success to commitment to art and a desire to paint above any other pursuit in life.

"If you put enough time and effort in, you'll succeed. I think what separates amateurs from professionals is just dedication."

While James admits that he rates the Koala amongst his best work, he gets the biggest kick from the big projects.

A massive 40m long, 21/2 storey high truck mural at the Shell truck stop in Narrabri, and the three-storey high farmer with his Angus calf on the LJ Hooker building in Moree are his favourites to date.

Closer to home, he recently completed an artwork in the Australian Hotel in Inverell.
