33rd Delungra Collectables Show proves a hit
29th of Aug, 2017 02:06 pm

From cow bells to matchbox cars, ruby glass to old kitchenware; there was something new to see everywhere you looked at the Delungra Collectables Show on the weekend.

Some travelling from as far afield as Newcastle and southern Queensland, collectors shared their personal obsessions with pride in over 60 three foot competitive displays.

Inverell and District Collectors Club secretary Leah Humphreys said the competitive aspect of the show was becoming quite unique, and that the club was proud to give visitors some eye candy, rather than expect them all to buy.

“It’s just amazing the range, especially in our kids section,” she said.

“We had kids that had insulators, bottles, their favourite animals - there was a collection of dogs, there was a collection of horses - and that’s what the kids collect.”

The open section had everything from a selection of doorknobs to various pieces of glassware, crockery and old tools. Also on display was stamps, coins, bottles and jugs.

Ms Humphreys, who collects ruby glass, said the collector’s bug could bite anyone.

“When you become a collector, you become a hoarder,” she laughed.

A display of Australiana and Aboriginal art left an impact, and took home the champion display ribbon.

The 33rd year of the show, Ms Humphreys said it has evolved over the years, shifting the focus from a bottle show to a chance to display a more broad range of collectables.

Members of the Inverell Breast Cancer Support Group were there raising funds through the sale of a collection of porcelain dolls.

Inverell Lions Club stepped in to help with the set up, clean up and insurance. The Delungra Girls Guides catered on the day and took the opportunity to fundraise.

“The girls get to gain some of those badges that they are working towards, and it gives them a few social skills and work ethic skils as well,” Ms Humphreys said.

All funds made on the day will be donated to the Inverell Prostrate Cancer Support Group.
