Numbers of Australia’s most loved native animal, the koala, are on the decline nationally, but what of our local populations in the New England and North West?
This Threatened Species Week (September 3 – 9) you are invited to learn more about your local koalas and threatened species at two community events – one in Bingara and the other in Delungra.
In a project initiated by Northern Tablelands Local Land Services, the University of the Sunshine Coast (Detection Dogs for Conservation) has recently been working with land managers, Landcare and Local Land Services to investigate where koalas are occurring near Ashford, Delungra, Warialda and Bingara.
The findings of recent studies will be presented at two community events, where you will also have the opportunity to see the koala detection dog in action and enjoy a free BBQ lunch.
Northern Tablelands Local Land Services Officer, Carina Johnson, said she looked forward to sharing the results of the recent “Cool Country Koala Project” with the local community.
“There have been some really interesting results emerge from the Delungra and Ashford studies, and with a number of koala surveys commencing near Warialda and Bingara, these events are a fantastic way to share new scientific knowledge specific to the local area,” said Carina.
Please RSVP to Shelley McDouall at Northern Slopes Landcare Association on 02 6724 2052 by Monday, September 4. This event is being supported by North West Local Land Services.
