Dog's delight at Delungra do
30th of Sep, 2014 05:00 am

Upwards of 100 top contending yard dogs from trainers and owners across the state converged on Delungra Show-ground on the weekend for the first of what co-ordinator Dave Wilkinson hopes will become an annual event.

Mr Wilkinson said it was a great turn out for the inaugural yard dog trial, with the local showground providing an ideal setting.

New South Wales champion yard dog trainer Justin Tombs was on hand as a guest judge for the event and Mr Wilkinson said the level of talent was outstanding.

The competitive trial centred on an obstacle course designed to test trainers and dogs through the paces of stock work with a trial herd of between 15 and 18 sheep, Mr Wilkinson said.

For Australian champion Sarah Mortimer, the course turned in favour for her and champion dog Dixie to take out the open event, while the earlier maiden and local events went respectively to local trainers Matt Ehsman with Nelly and Mr Wilkinson with Charlie.

State champ Tombs took out the maiden event with winning dog Kez.

Mr Wilkinson said the high jump, held on Saturday evening proved a popular drawcard for spectators, with local hospitality establishments coming out to provide an excellent atmosphere to ring in the first competition.

Banking on an equally impressive response, Mr Wilkinson said he was joined by fellow coordinators Matt Ehsman and Jill Brown in looking forward to a bigger and better event in the New Year.
