DESPITE some cold weather, Copeton Dam was a popular spot last weekend.
Copeton Waters manager David Allan said numbers were up compared to last year’s Labour Day holiday.
“It was a beautiful day on Monday and the bookings were good for the weekend, we had a few cancellations because of the weather,” Mr Allan said.
“But we had 100 camp sites filled, all the cabins and we used the bunk house and we had 50 per cent of the powered sites full.
“Being a long weekend our numbers were up and they were up on the corresponding weekend last year and that’s because of our improved facilities,” Mr Allan said.
There is also more water in the dam this year and Mr Allan said there was a big inflow this weekend.
“We had a 20 to 30 per cent water level last year, this year we’re over 50 per cent,” Mr Allan said.
“Over the weekend the dam rose one metre and went from 51 to 53 per cent.
“We had inflows of 27,000 megalitres, which is a lot of water,” Mr Allan said.
But does more water necessarily mean better luck with the fish?
“The fish have been co-operating,” Mr Allan reassured.
“They’re catching catfish and yellowbelly.
“The couple of cold days have slowed them down a bit but with a bit more water in and a few sunny days there’ll be some good fishing to be had here,” Mr Allan said.
