Residents in the local area will next week get a chance to have a say on the federal Government’s policy to put a price on carbon emissions.
Nationals senator John ‘Wacka’ Williams said he would be distributing survey forms into homes outlining both sides of the carbon tax debate.
“I urge people to complete the survey form and return it to my office as soon as possible. Adding their name and address is optional, but if they prefer not to, I would ask that they write their postcode.”
More than 57,000 survey forms will be distributed throughout the New England electorate.
Senator Williams took a swipe at New England MP Tony Windsor, saying he felt compelled to survey the electorate because Mr Windsor hadn’t.
Senator Williams said there was palpable anger in the community over the policy, which aims to cut Australia’s carbon emissions by charging certain companies.
If the policy is legislated, any company which directly emits more than 25,000 tonnes of carbon a year will be forced to pay $23 a tonne for that pollution.
Senator Williams said the results of the New England survey would be published and presented to Mr Windsor and Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
