SCHOOL students across the Inverell district were treated to the sounds of the Sydney Sinfonia on Wednesday.
Holy Trinity School hosted the Sydney Symphony’s mentoring orchestra and they performed three educational and entertaining concerts for primary and secondary students. Students attended from Ross Hill Public, Inverell Public, Delungra Public, Gum Flat Public, Ashford Central, Macintyre High, Inverell High, Warialda High and Tingha Public schools.
Sydney Symphony education manager Margaret Moore said the students heard a combination of music.
“They were able to learn about the different families of the orchestra and each session was suited to the age groups of the children,” Mrs Moore said.
“The main aim of the visit was to give children in regional areas the chance to find out more and to see the joys and wonders of classical music.
“The children were wonderful and they all enjoyed interacting with the musicians and hearing the music.”
Among the orchestra members was former Inverell resident Ron Prussing.
He is the principal trombone player of the orchestra.
During the performances, Sapphire City Band members Lee Evans and Geoff Croft also had a turn at conducting.
Mrs Moore said Inverell residents had been very welcoming.
“The last time the orchestra came to Inverell was about six years ago and we love coming out this way,” she said.
“It is a great place and a lovely break for us away from the city.”
The orchestra also performed at schools in Moree on Tuesday and Armidale yesterday.
The Sydney Symphony Fellowship Ensemble will performing at 8pm tomorrow at The Roxy Theatre in Bingara.
This concert is the only public performance by the ensemble in the region.
