Delungra and Ross Hill Public Schools won New England Region Excellence in Education Awards at a ceremony in Glen Innes last week.

Macintyre High School student Steffie Robinson also received an Excellence in Student Leadership Award.

Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay who gave the keynote address at the ceremony, congratulated the Inverell and district award winners for their dedication and outstanding achievements.

“The public schools in our region are second to none and these awards recognise exceptional initiatives and leadership. The competition is keen and all award recipients should feel very proud of what they have achieved in a strong field,” he said.

Delungra Public School took out the Excellence in Innovation Award for its You Can Do It campaign which has lifted school enrolments and morale within the school community. The program was adopted when enrolments began to drop and suspensions at the school had reached unacceptable levels.

Through encouraging confidence, persistence, getting along together, good organisation and resilience in all its activities and engaging the whole school community, it has increased its enrolments, created a more positive learning environment and registered stronger community satisfaction, Mr Torbay said.

Ross Hill Public School was awarded the Excellence in Student Wellbeing award for its practices in addressing the needs of the student population through its school welfare team and total school community approach. The school has also embraced the You Can Do It program and has noted significant improvements in student performance, staff morale, participation and support from parents and improved community relationships.

Steffie Robinson has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills as a member of the Macintyre High Student Representative Council, represented Australia at the Global Leaders Conference in the USA in 2006 and the Model United Nations Assembly in 2007. She has been a district finalist in the Lion’s Youth of the Year competition and was recognised in 2007 with the Australian Defence Force Academy’s Leadership Award.
