ARMIDALE'S two major state high schools will be looking a bit smarter when term starts, thanks to a summer holiday spruce-up announced by the State Government.
More than $56,000 will be spent replacing floor coverings and installing a new hot water service at Armidale High, while nearly $9000 will go toward new floor coverings at Duval High.
Minister for Education and Training, John Watkins, said the work was part of a $139,175 summer spruce-up for Northern Tablelands schools.
Mr Watkins said 13 local schools would benefit from $9.2 million in repairs to 399 schools across the state.
The local schools involved are:
• Armidale High School, $56,068 for replacement floor coverings and a new hot water service
• Ben Lomond Public School, $12,199 for a roof replacement
• Black Mountain Public School, $4807 for water storage
• Chandler Public School, $4938 for replacement of floor covering
• Delungra Public School, $18,150 for water installation-piping
• Duval High School, $8731 for replacement of floor covering

• Wytaliba Public School, $12,100 for storage batteries
"This work is part of the Carr Government's $179 million 2002/2003 School Maintenance Program and is set to commence during the summer school holidays,” Mr Watkins said.
"Once the work has been completed, the school communities will notice improvements in overall maintenance and upkeep,” he said.
"This program will also help to build a strong economy by creating 184 jobs across the state.
"This is an exciting program which will benefit a large number of NSW primary, secondary and central schools.”
