Data shows rural roads pay for themselves
3rd of Oct, 2011 01:50 pm

The Australian Rural Roads Group says it has collected new data showing roads in the region more than pay their way but are not being properly funded in return.

Four roads in the Gwydir Shire Council area have been monitored.

Road counters were fitted to stretches of road about 20km in length to assess their productivity and their contribution to the Commonwealth's fuel excise.

The chairman of the group, and Mayor of Gwydir Shire Council, John Coulton, says the data will be released officially this week.

"We've proved that the roads are paying their own way and that was just on fuel excise; we haven't factored in the registration portion of it which obviously goes to the State Government," he said.

"It's a demonstration to the Government that we're not out in the backblocks and being subsidised by whoever they think we are.

"These productive areas are paying their way but, of course, we well know that the money is not being returned."
