Main through road speed limit back up to 60km/h

INVERELL'S highway speed limits will be back up to 60km/h this week.

But it's still unclear when drivers will be officially allowed to increase speed.

The new road signs have gone up and the old 50km/h road markings will be changed this week, four months after councillors voted to scrap their relatively new highway speed limit.

Inverell Shire Council general manager Paul Henry said drivers should still travel at 50km/h until the road marking changes were finished.

"Once that has been completed, it will be made official that the speed limit through town is 60km/h.”

Mr Henry said he expected the change would be made official by the end of this week. Roads included in the 60km/h change are the Gwydir Highway at both town approaches from Glen Innes and Warialda, the Tingha Road, Ashford Road, Swanbrook Road and Ring Street.

The urban arterial roads through Gilgai, Ashford, Bonshaw, Delungra, Yetman and Cherry Tree Hill will also be reverted to 60km/h.

The change was originally made as the RTA was encouraging councils to adopt the lower speed limit because of the perceived minimisation of pedestrian dangers

But Mr Henry said: The council had received many representations from members of the community indicating that in the main thoroughfares through town, an increase of 10km would assist in vehicle movement.”
