Riders turned away as Delungra camp draft grows in stature

DELUNGRA Sports Ground came to life on the weekend when a Delungra Campdraft was finally held. The previous two planned events were cancelled due to the dry weather.

Part of the proceeds will go to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and president of the Delungra Sports Association Campdraft, John Saunders, said the event ran pretty well to plan.

“We had 765 runs and there were no dramas or incidents. The committee all worked well and we had helpers from outside who were a great help,” John said.

“The cattle were as good a cattle as you’d run into anywhere, for the whole weekend. They were terrific cattle, it’s hard to get good cattle these days.”

The cattle were provided by local producers and John said he needed to thank them and the event’s sponsors for the support the Campdraft had received.

Association secretary Sharon Edwards said the cattle had received very high praise from the competitors.

“Without them we would not be able to hold this event in our small community,” Sharon said.

“It was an excellent campdraft. It was a huge night on Saturday night with entertainment and dancing. Everyone had a good time and all of the competitors were wanting to know if they could put their entries in now for next year.”

Sharon said the event’s waiting list was long and there were a lot of competitors who did not get in.

“You can only take so many. We could expand it and go for three days, but Delungra is just so small and we’re only a small committee. You get very tired,” she said.

Sharon said more committee people for the event would be welcomed, and with the grounds being used more and more these days, they were trying to upgrade the infrastructure, including the 40-year-old wooden fenced arena and water supply.
