CLEANUP Australia Day was held on Sunday, March 4 in the Inverell Shire including Ashford and Delungra.

About 180 people volunteered to tidy up and representatives from Holy Trinity School, SES, RFS, Inverell Apex Club and numerous parents and teachers participated.

Inverell volunteers undertook cleaning areas along Tingha Road from Golf Club to town, Ashford Road from the Nullamanna turnoff to town, along the riverbank between the Tingha bridge and the suspension bridge and sections of south Inverell.

The streets of Ashford and Delungra were also cleaned.

Environmental health officer for Inverell Shire Council, Terry Cum, said he did not know how much rubbish was collected but the council truck collecting it made three trips to the tip.

“The majority of litter was takeaway cartons, which don’t have very much weight in them,” Terry said.

“You get so far out along the road and there’s an area where you can see the containers have been thrown out the car windows as people have been passing through.

“It doesn’t take long for it to get back to the way it was, it must be so frustrating for all those people who go and clean up the streets every year,” Terry said.
