WORLD superbike champion Warwick Nowland has been announced as Inverell’s Australia Day ambassador.
Nowland, who was born in Sydney but now lives in London, will be part of the activities and events in town on January 26.
As part of the celebrations, Nowland will deliver the keynote address which will capture the true spirit of being Australian.
The 35-year-old has been an ambassador before and is looking forward to being part of the Inverell Shire activities.
Nowland’s hobbies included motocross, live music, playing the piano and drums, shopping, body surfing, graphic designing and cleaning.
As a professional motorcyle racer he said his greatest moment was walking up to accept his award at the FIM World Champions Awards night in Monaco.
“Miss Belgium presented me with the award and just seeing the footage of me racing on two huge video screens each side of the stage was amazing,” Nowland said.
The Australia Day Ambassador program started in 1990 with nine ambassadors and has steadily grown over the years.
Last year, more than 170 ambassadors from a wide range of fields including sports heroes, celebrities, writers, artists, business people, environmentalists, scientists and community workers, took part in celebrations across the state.
On Australia Day, celebrations will take place at Inverell Pioneer Village from 3pm.
The Inverell Australia Day committee met yesterday afternoon to finalise the program for the event and discuss entertainment.
At the event, the Citizen, Young Citizen and Event awards will be presented.
Other celebrations will be at the Delungra Sportsground from 10am to 3pm and the Ashford Apex Park from 8am to 11pm.
