FARMERS and small businesses in the Delungra area will get some financial assistance from the government before a decision is made on its claim for Exceptional Circumstances drought assistance.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig announced on Friday that interim drought assistance would be available to farmers and small business operators in the area while the federal Government considered their EC application.
If EC status is granted both farmers and small businesses in the area will be eligible to get loans from the government.
New England MP Tony Windsor and Inverell-based senator John Williams both welcomed the move.
"I congratulate all those involved in getting Delungra's EC application together and thank Minister Ludwig and the Australian Government for their recognition of the serious hardship many farming families continue to face," Mr Windsor said.
Senator Williams expressed similar sentiments.
"Minister Ludwig has recognised that although conditions have improved in recent months, the previous couple of years had taken its toll in the Delungra region," Senator Williams said.
"He has asked the National Rural Advisory Council (NRAC) to consider whether a formal EC declaration should be made, but it is good to see he has agreed to the short term assistance.
NRAC members inspected the district early last month.
"I stressed to the them the need for help," Senator Williams said.
"They were very diligent in their inspections and meetings and only time will tell if NRAC will eventually recommend full EC assistance.
"In the meantime I would encourage farmers and small business operators in the Delungra application area to contact the Drought Assistance Hotline."
Mr Windsor and Senator Williams both encouraged farmers and small business operators to contact the Drought Assistance Hotline on 13 23 16. For more information on EC assistance visit the website www.daff.gov.au/agriculture-food/ drought/ec
