A series of public meetings to discuss Inverell Shire Council’s waste management strategy have been held across the shire with strong interest from the community.
“We’ve completed seven so far, with 55 attending the meeting at Glum Flat,” Brett McInnes, director civil and environmental services, said.
“There has been a pattern of key issues, any significant change to methods of providing services has interest.”
Mr McInnes said residents namely raised concerns about the number and location of transfer stations outlined in the strategy as well as the impact of roadside dumping and vandalism in relation to tip closures.
“The question and answer sessions have ranged in length from one hour to an hour and a half,” he said.
“Most people have been wanting to get a better understanding of environmental standards and issues.
“They have accepted it’s not something that happened overnight, the management committee have been working on it for two years.”
Mr McInnes said council have taken the feedback on board and recommendations should be ready for presentation at the September council meeting.
The next waste management strategy information meeting will be held 2pm today at Delungra Bowling Club. Meetings will also be held at Yetman general store (Wednesday, August 4 at 10am) and Ashford Bowling Club (Tuesday, August 10 at 7pm).
The management strategy is currently on exhibition and will be for an extended time of two more weeks, until August 24.
