LANDCARE. It’s a name, a word that has slipped a bit from the public arena over the last few years.
Gwydir-Macintyre Landcare (or GWYMAC) is the local non-profit, community owned organisation operating under the Landcare banner. And, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the local land care, let us introduce the two women who are the public face and driving force in Inverell and surrounding districts - Fiona Adams and Debi Bancroft (pictured right).
Both women are ‘wise old owls’ when it comes to understanding the lay of the land in Landcare, and are keen to keep helping people on the land and those people interested in the land, Landcare projects and activities.
GWYMAC is a free community service provider and is run by a volunteer committee of local landholders. Identifying funding for landholders and community groups is just one of the priorities the organisation attends to. GWYMAC also conducts field days, bus trips and workshops, staff help prepare funding applications and implement Landcare projects across 40,000 square kilometres. Services are provided to communities far and wide including Inverell, Delungra, Ashford, Yetman, Tingha, Bundarra, Bonshaw and everywhere in between.
GWYMAC also co-ordinates Landcare groups across the Macintyre and Gwydir catchments, and Debi and Fiona are in a great position to access expert advice for landholders.
