Help for war widows
30th of Oct, 2009 08:31 am

JOBS Australia in conjunction with Inverell Legacy Club Project has just kicked off one of the most worthwhile projects ever undertaken in the Inverell community.

Inverell Legacy is a small group of senior men and women who look after all of the war widows not only here in Inverell but in Ashford, Delungra, Bundarra and other areas in the region.

These ladies are no longer able to undertake tasks such as mowing, gardening, fencing, hedge trimming, paving and day to day around the house chores, especially at this time of year when everything is starting to grow.

Dave Kearsey from the Work Experience sector of the Jobs Australia network who takes care of the Work for the Dole projects in the community has stepped in and taken care of this responsibility.

“I now have a team of five guys along with a supervisor working two full days a week going from house to house doing everything that needs to be done to restore and clean up their gardens and yards,” said Kearsey. “Jobs Australia has supplied us with a van and trailer specifically for this project. The Inverell tip has also seen how worthwhile it is and has offered to not charge us for any rubbish we have to get rid of for the ladies.

“I have been going around and meeting each lady personally before the guys get there and some of the ladies can’t believe that we can do this for them absolutely free. A lot of these ladies don’t have any family here or at all who can help them with these tasks,” said Kearsey.

“The guys are even painting a lady’s entire house for her at Delungra,” he said.

“I am born and raised in Inverell and love that I can deliver this free service to one of the most deserving group of people in our community.

“It is a great initiative and we are rapt to be apart of it.”
