16th of Oct, 2009 08:42 am

A VETERANS Day was held at Inverell Women’s Bowling Club on Tuesday October 13. This special day is held each year to honour Super Veterans and Star Veterans and their achievements and contributions to their respective clubs over the years. In a fantastic day, the recipients honoured could not have been more deserving.

Star Veterans included Rita Slattery and Meryl Fitzell (Inverell Womens) while Super Veterans were Jess Fairweather (Inverell Womens), Betty Ebzery of Glen Innes.

President Elaine Symko presented each with a posy and pinned on their badges in a touching display to each of the inductees.

One look at the ir respective resumes and it is not ahrd to see why they have received these commendations.

Rita Slattery joined the Delungra Bowling Club in 1966. She moved to the Inverell Club in 1980, and then Inverell Womens Club in 2000. She was vice-president at the City Club and a selector at Delungra.

Rita has won numerous championships at Club and District level.

This includes all district events many times, and was the singles champion twice.

At the City Club she was the champion four times, and at Delungra twice. She has two State Pennant badges in No.3 pennants. Rita was also selected in the Country versus Metropolitan side.

Rita has umpired for 26 years and done numerous reaccreditations of umpires, and has also coached for 23 years.

She still umpires and coaches whenever asked, and has been recognised for her services to the Club Ltd by being made a life member.

This year at 90, Rita was the runner-up in both the District Mixed Fours and Club Mixed Fours and played in our No.4 Pennants and she still plays a great game of bowls.

Meryl Fitzell joined the Inverell Womens Bowling Club in 1989.She had a great win in the Club Triples with Kath Gilhome, and played many games with Grace Coote with success.

Helen Hudson said they often travelled to carnivals and bowls days together. Meryl spoiled the club with donations for raffles and trading tables. Meryl is always a keen opponent on the green, and enjoys her social bowls.
