More than 10 tonnes of rubbish was picked up from Inverell and Ashford on Sunday’s Clean Up Australia Day.
Willing helpers came together to get rid of rubbish from around the town and waterways.
Apex members in Inverell pulled more than 45 shopping trolleys out of the Macintyre River, and volunteers also cleaned up stretches of road from the Nullamanna turnoff to town and Gooniwiggal to town and along the river bank.
General Duties Officer with the Inverell Shire Council, Max Doogood, said there was a lot of support from service clubs and schools around the district.
“There were more volunteers in both Ashford and Inverell thanks to groups getting involved, and Delungra was also involved. We also had great sponsors, including PFD, IGA, Apex, Rotary, Lions the RFS and Symes Bus Service.”
McDonalds and Norco Rural were also sponsors.
Groups involved in Clean Up Australia Day in the Inverell area include Apex, Inverell and Macintyre Lions, Rotary, Holy Trinity School, Ashford Central School, Delungra Girl Guides, the SES, South Inverell Residents Association and the Catchment Management Authority.
In the past 19 years, Australians have devoted more than eight million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected over 200,000 tonnes of rubbish and Clean Up Australia Day is now a global sensation through Clean Up The World.
