Looking for the top guns
16th of Sep, 2008 09:40 am

THE nations best silhouette pistol shooters will descend upon Delungra this Friday to showcase their skill and compete for selection in the Australian team at the 22nd National Metallic Silhouette Championship.

Bevan Hentrick from the Inverell RSM Pistol Club will be representing Inverell at the championship and is looking forward to a weekend of exciting competition.

“It is amazing to watch some of the top shooters in action, especially when it gets to the shoot-out stage of competition, they are knocking down tiny metallic chickens at 200 yards to secure the top spot.”

38 shooters from around Australia including NSW, Queensland, ACT, Victoria and Tasmania will have to shoot metallic silhouette chickens at 50 yards, pigs at 100 yards, turkeys at 150 yards and rams at 200 yards, knocking down as many as possible out of forty shots before progressing to the next round of competition.

The top guns named at these championships will be picked in the national squad for oceanic and world championships.

Mr Hentrick said Delungra Pistol Range was one of only four venues nation wide that were able to host the national championships.

“The range at Delungra is an excellent venue and I encourage members of the public to come out and watch what these shooters can do.

“Pistol shooting used to be very popular, but it has had a decline in the last few years, if anyone is interested in joining our club or finding out more they should contact myself on 6722 1548, Phillip De Fraine on 6754 0251 or Neville Johnson on 6722 3953.

“Anyone can do this sport, both men and women and it is very skilled and good to watch.”

The National Metallic Silhouette Championships start at 9am on Friday at the Delungra Pistol Range on Hayward Rd and continue on Saturday and Sunday from 8am until 3pm both days.
